Iolite is a magnesium aluminum silicate mineral with a hardness of 7 to 7.5. It forms in short prismatic crystals that have an orthorhombic structure. The name Iolite comes from the stone's violet color. Iolite is also known as Cordierite, Dichroite and/or Water Sapphire. The most important Iolite deposits are on Brazil, Madagascar, Burma, India and Sri Lanka.
